You hi this is Fred Newman of Hamlin Newman elder law attorney serving all 22 counties in the state of New Jersey in the practice of elder law in our last video we talked about Medicaid eligibility, and we talked about medical eligibility you may recall that I told you that primarily there are two areas of eligibility that Medicaid's interested in financial eligibility and medical eligibility in our prior video discussed and identified the criteria for medical eligibility financial eligibility is a whole other topic here's what it basically boils down to New Jersey wants you to be poor they want to impoverish all middle class and upper middle class families and by that I mean they want you spent down to no more than two thousand dollars of total assets if you are single that's it if you are married there are other ways you can preserve and protect additional resources, but single people in particular are very vulnerable to the financial eligibility requirements two thousand dollars of resources and virtually no exemptions other than New Jersey lets you keep thirty-five dollars a month as a personal needs allowance for a married couple a couple with dependent children there are additional techniques we can use to save the house and to preserve and protect about a hundred nine thousand dollars of additional resources there are other strategies available, but those would be much too complex for this particular video so what do you do to achieve Medicaid eligibility you need to consult with a qualified elder law attorney these attorneys work daily in the field of asset and income protection with the goal of keeping families with as much of their lifetime savings and hard work as possible that's our mission here and handle Newman I believe my mission is to empower and enable the middle class and upper middle class to preserve a legacy for their children where I can, but you need to act prior to the onset of a crisis Medicaid planning for eligibility is much different and much more involved so if you take nothing out of this video just know this we need five years in order to completely protect what you have from long term care if we have less than five years there's still a lot we can do but the less time we have the less we can do, so I hope you'll keep that in mind, and I'll talk to you a little later in another video on the third criteria for eligibility that is residency and citizenship
